Know Love

What does it mean to “love yourself”? We see those words in plenty of self-help books and in pop songs on the radio, but how often do we really experience it? One of the great lessons of this year has been remembering our worth. Aside from what we do for money or our marital status or how many square feet we own (rent), that we know (truly know) that we are worthy of life…love…and respect. Do you know your worth? Just Breathe

In our frenzied culture, it is easy to ignore the things that are closest to us. When we become overwhelmed by external demands, our attention falls away from the very things that sustain us. Our intimate relationships, our health, and our breath. Despite our never-ending to-do lists and overpacked schedules, if we simply put our focus on the pieces of our life that support us, we will find the strength to carry on. Make the Change

Making a change is hard, but sometimes it is the only thing that will set us free. A life is made up of days, hours, and seconds. If we are not spending that time doing something that makes us feel alive and valuable then we will most likely look back with some regret. No matter where you are in life, it is a good time to ask yourself whether you’re happy and if not, maybe it’s time to do something about it. Karla is an art teacher living in Los Angeles, CA. She likes going on long hikes with her dog and rooting for her first middle school crush, Kobe Bryant, and the LA Lakers. Deal With It

We’re all searching for meaning in one way or another. The thing nobody tells you is that those feelings of restlessness and uncertainty never go away. We are always charting and re-charting our course. None of us have it all figured out and maybe that’s how it was meant to be. Love is Forever

Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things in life. It is a time when we reevaluate what is meaningful to us, reminisce on the past, and call on forces greater than ourselves. What if we could bring this same awareness to our everyday lives? What if the possibility of transcending time and space existed for us in the here and now? Just Do You

We are confronted with so many different expectations everyday. Sometimes the best thing we can do is drown out all that noise with the one voice that really counts – our own. Despite what the masses say, despite what our parents say, we are the only ones who know what’s right for us and the more we listen to that voice within, the better we will get at following it. Make it Matter

Sometimes we are in such a rush to get to our destination, we forget to nurture those parts of ourselves and others that matter most. Instead of thinking in terms of material progress and success, what if we counted those unquantifiable acts of kindness, courage, and forgiveness most? What if we decided to be people of character instead of just avatars of beauty, success, or some other empty category? Yvonne decided to give up  her successful career as an attorney to focus on raising her sons into men of character. You can find her cheering them on in the classroom and on the football field. Start with One

When we hear the words “American Dream,” we often think of what can be gained. We struggle to keep up with bigger, better, faster, newer, believing that the next thing will satisfy us. In this frenzied search for more, we forget to ask ourselves what it’s all for. In pursuit of this material vision, we lose sight of the ideals – life, liberty, and justice for all – and how we might serve to reclaim them.  Helie is a bestselling author, documentary filmmaker, and co-founder of KAFE. She speaks around the country on her bicultural heritage and human rights for North Korean refugees.
